The most common way a small marketing budget gets wasted is not a bad channel. It is five channels at once, which is where most lists of small business marketing ideas lead you. A bit of Facebook, a bit of Google, a flyer, a directory listing, a social media person for a few hours a week. Each gets too little to work, none produces enough signal to judge, and after six months the conclusion is that marketing does not work for this business. It usually just never got a fair test anywhere.
Before you spend anything
Three things are free, take a few hours, and change what every later dollar is worth.
Work out what a customer is worth to you
Not one sale, the relationship. BDC, in its guidance on customer acquisition cost, recommends comparing acquisition cost to customer lifetime value and watching that ratio, counting only the direct costs of winning new customers. Without this number every budget conversation is a guess and you cannot tell an expensive channel from a profitable one.
Fix the place people land
Traffic to a page that converts nobody produces nothing at any budget. One clear page per service, an obvious way to get in touch, a form that works on a phone. This is the cheapest multiplier available and almost everyone skips it to go buy traffic.
Claim the free real estate
Your Google Business Profile, completed properly, and a steady habit of asking for reviews. For a local business this is the highest return unpaid work there is, and we cover the review side in how to get more Google reviews.
Then pick one channel, based on one question
Are people already searching for what you sell?
If yes, which covers most trades, clinics, repair services and professional firms, start with search. The demand exists and you are choosing whether to capture it. Google Ads buys that demand immediately, SEO earns it slowly, and most small businesses run ads while SEO builds. The comparison is in SEO vs Google Ads.
If no, which covers new products, unfamiliar services and anything people do not know to look for, search will not save you because nobody is typing the query. Your budget goes toward getting in front of the right people another way: partnerships with businesses serving the same customer, local presence, referral habits, and showing the thing being used.
Getting this one question wrong is how businesses conclude that Google Ads does not work, when the truth was that nobody searches for what they sell.
How much is enough for a fair test
Enough to produce a readable number of enquiries. For most local businesses that means a few hundred dollars a month for at least three months on a single channel, not fifty dollars across four. The threshold is not a budget rule, it is a statistics one. Two enquiries tell you nothing about whether a channel works.
If you cannot fund one channel properly, that is a real answer and a useful one. Spend the money on the free list above and on getting more from customers you already have, which is almost always cheaper than acquiring new ones.
The customers you already have
Underrated to the point of being invisible. A past customer costs nothing to reach, already trusts you, and converts at a rate no advertising matches. A short list of things that cost close to nothing:
Contact everyone you served twelve months ago with something genuinely useful rather than a promotion. Ask your best customers directly whether they know someone with the same problem, because most people will help if asked plainly and almost nobody is asked. Collect contact details at the point of sale so you can reach people later, which is the entire logic behind a counter QR code. And make the thing worth talking about, since referrals are the only channel that gets cheaper as it grows.
What to avoid on a small budget
An agency retainer before you have a page that converts, because you are paying someone to deliver traffic into a leak. Posting on social platforms with no plan, which consumes the most time per result of anything on this list. A full website rebuild when the current site is merely ugly rather than broken, which is a question we take apart in signs it is time for a redesign. And any channel you cannot measure, because on a small budget you cannot afford to keep funding something on faith.
Measure two things only
How many enquiries arrived, and how many became customers. Everything else is detail. If you know those two numbers per channel, you know where the next dollar goes, and you will make better decisions than a business with ten times your budget and no idea which half is working.
The practical side of it is one line recorded per enquiry: a field on the form, a note after each call. By the spring you are choosing between channels on evidence rather than on the impression that one of them feels busier.
Frequently asked questions
What is a reasonable marketing budget for a small business?
Commonly framed as a percentage of revenue, which is a starting point rather than an answer. The better anchor is what a customer is worth over the relationship and how many you want. That turns a budget into a target instead of a guess.
Should I do social media?
Only if your customers make decisions there and you can sustain it. For many local service businesses it is a presence to maintain rather than an acquisition channel, and treating it as the main effort is where a lot of small budgets quietly go.
Is it worth hiring someone at this size?
Worth it when the constraint is your time rather than your knowledge, and when the free items are already done. Hiring to skip the fundamentals means paying a premium for work you could have done yourself.
How long before I judge a channel?
Three months of consistent spend at a level that produces enough enquiries to count. Judging at three weeks is how businesses quit channels that were about to work.
What if I have almost no budget at all?
Do the free list, ask past customers for referrals, and get reviews arriving steadily. That combination has started more local businesses than advertising has.
